The 3GPP/GSMA folks may claim that their roadmap offers “graceful evolution” for machines, but we do not have to look far into the past to see that this has never been the case, and likely never will be the case. Let’s look at three categories of issues that run counter to a “graceful evaluation” and destroys the Return-On-Investment (ROI) of low-end machines: Sunsetting Risk, Fragmentation, and Machine Priority.

There are lots of pilots being announced within 3GPP/GSMA so isn’t commercial service imminent? The short answer is no. Pilots, as defined in this industry, are a short-circuit of the process. The original Nuel/Huawei “clean-slate” proposal (which is now defunct) had a number of pilots. Clearly, that was not on the path of offering a commercial service.
Despite vendor’s and cellular carriers’ claims that service is imminent for cellular, these systems are years away from a commercial offering. Standards and minimum performance specifications must be finalized, silicon and nodes must be productized, certification programs developed, and ecosystems must be built.
By contrast, RPMA technology is available today.
Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networking technologies are attempting to connect 10s (even 100s) of Billions of currently unconnected endpoints. The cellular industry is aggressively pursuing an offering for Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) through the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards body. By doing so, the cellular industry is conceding that a new approach is required and that the current cellular systems (2G, 3G, 4G LTE) do not address the requirements of these LPWA devices. There are several flavors of the cellular LPWA roadmap including NB-IOT, LTE-M, and EC-GSM.
However, the cellular LPWA approaches are over-constrained and will disappoint customers for many of the same reasons that cellular technology to date has been disappointing to the customers.

In the third and final part of this blog series, I’ll focus on building a parser to grab our data from Intellect and send it on up to AT&T’s M2X platform.
So now that our Arduino is pulling some measurements and sending them to a properly configured RPMA DevKit board (rACM), it’s time to pull that data out of Intellect and send it on to M2X. This part got pretty tricky for me, as it was my first real foray into Python. Plus, M2X is really picky about the data you feed it.

Back in Part One of my blog series, I set an Arduino Yún to take readings from a DHT11 temperature + humidity sensor and shared the Arduino sketch I threw together to make it all work. First thing’s first, I knew I would have to configure the RPMA DevKit board to receive/transmit serial transmissions and forward those on to Intellect. The files & scripts included in the Starter Pack downloadable make this a pretty easy process.
